Hello Leah,

I am organizing a student working group to advocate for Asian American Studies here at UNC-Chapel Hill. I read of your initiative in a 2000 Cavalier article (http://cavalierdaily.student.virginia.edu/CVarticle.asp?ID=5994&Date=10/17/00&Keyword=Asian&Keyword2=Studies) and was wondering if I could get an update on your efforts. Do you have an AAS faculty member yet? What courses are being offered? What is the administration's current position?

Thanks for any information, Andrew Chin

Dear Professor Chin:

Don't know the source of your information about the "Asian American Studies initiative" here at UVA, but it WAS correct, until very recently.

The Asian American Students and I have been working very hard over the past couple of years toward the establishment of such a program, and we designed a year long course on Asian American Culture [AMEL301-302] , taught this past academic year. I will be teaching AMEL301 again this Fall. We had gotten the attention of the Dean, and had broached the department faculty [Asian and Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures] about the possibility of providing a home for a minor in Asian American Studies. While there is some support, the response has not been exactly overwhelming.

Beyond that, I am retiring at the end of the coming semester, and the person who taught AMEL302, and was going to "carry the ball" has just informed us that he is leaving the University of Virginia for another position.

Despite the support of the Dean, given the recent crisis with the state budget, chances of funding a new position are NIL. THEREFORE, while the prospects for a program looked rosy a year ago, they look a lot less so now. Unless some faculty comes out of the woodwork and offers to teach the courses.....
