  NEWS: (Dated July 1999) I graduated from Harvey Mudd College in May, 1998, as did fellow spring '97 BSM'ers Rif "Andrew" Hutchings and Patri "he has a volume knob, but it's stuck on eleven" Friedman. I wrote a Budapest Restaurant Guide when I returned from BSM, and I intend to update it soon, based on my recent visit to Budapest in May, 1999. I have to say the spring 1999 BSM'ers were awesome. Miskolc! Nyuszi! I am now a Ph.D student in operations research at Cornell University, as are Rif and Ranjith Rajagopalan (F'97 and S'98). We were all inspired by the same middle school math teacher, Randy Moon. Pretty cool coincidence, eh? The Margit-sziget games got me hooked on Ultimate, and I have been playing a lot of it recently. I played my first tournament in Duluth, MN with a pick-up team on 19 June 1999. I'm also on the Shake, Cornell's laid-back men's team. One of my teammates is Russ Woodroofe (F'97). For those of you who don't know, Rif won the 1998 College Jeopardy! Championship, which inspired me to lead a big fund-raising drive to create, with much help from Patri, the Rif Hutchings Endowment, which funds an annual math scholarship and prizes for top Putnam performers at Harvey Mudd. The first Rif Hutchings Scholar is Josh Greene (S'00 and F'00). For those of you who know Timi and Pixie, you can thank me and Chris Santillo (S'97). Before us, they never knew there was a sport called Ultimate.

Although I had tried to learn some Bulgarian before I went, all I could think of were phrases in Hungarian!

  NEWS: (Dated June 2004) After graduating from St.Olaf I wandered around for a while before settling in Northern California. I spent 7 years working in Silicon Valley as a consultant. I now live in La Selva Beach on the central coast of California. I work in Carmel as a programmer at Welton Investment Corporation writing trading research software. I miss all my BSM compatriots and the thrill of a good math challenge. My greatest challenge of late has been competing in the Wildflower Triathlon to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Drop me a line if you like.

  NEWS: (Dated May 2000) After BSM, I got my Ph.D. in math from the University of Chicago, followed by a string of temporary positions in academia. I took some of the actuarial exams and actually got an offer to be an actuarial technician - but an offer for a research position elsewhere came the next day, and I took it. I have been doing that for almost three years. My wife (Krisztina Székely) and I have three daughters: Dorottya (born August 92), Anna (May 94), and Boroka (April 00). Krisztina became the leader of the Hungarian Scouts in Chevy Chase (just north of DC) last fall. We have a house in Linthicum, MD, near the light rail into Baltimore. Anna and Dorottya enjoy riding the train. I enjoy getting to work without a car.

  NEWS: (Dated July 2000) Graduated Minna Cum Laude from Hampshire College May 2000. Received p.h.D from French Culinary Institute and the Sorbonne(joint program) in June. Am currently following my thesis work on souffle-style architecture: this, if you haven't heard of it, is a fairly new field of architecture in which we attempt to give our buildings the characteristics of a well-made souffle: lightness, aesthetic appeal, and the tendency to collapse when temperature drops below that of a hot oven. The mathematics involved revolves mainly around the theory of unimodular hypergeometries and non-commutative numerical addition (see Bortinsfuffer, 1987). As for hobbies, I enjoy snorkeling, muckraking, and long walks. I am currently acting interim Assistant to the Vice-President of Christian Youth United For American Values. Good luck!

The next fall I went to grad school in math at University of Wisconsin--Madison with 3 years of support from the NSF. In the summer of '96 I defended (successfully) a PhD dissertation in algebraic combinatorics written under Paul Terwilliger. A few weeks later I was offto Japan for a JSPS postdoctoral fellowship. During the last two years I was been affiliated with Kyushu University (I can't bring myself to say "I worked there"; "research" would describe some of what I did). In June '98 I got married to Lin Yi-Chia of Taiwan. In the fall of '98 I started a 3 year NSF postdoctoral fellowship with Vaughan Jones of UC-Berkeley. But the first year he is on sabbatical at the University of Geneva, so I have had to make the sacrifice and follow him.

  NEWS: (Dated July 1999) What I'm doing these days: Graduated from Pomona in 1997, then stuck around for another year doing some work in statistics and economics. In October, 1998, came to Berlin, Germany to do research in statistics and economics at the "Sonderforschungsbereich 373" research institute at the Humboldt University, funded by a Fulbright. Now the Fulbright's over, but I'm still here (getting money from elsewhere), doing a project with wavelets and the stock market. I'm presenting my first paper (which I'm currently writing) at a conference in September! In the fall, I'll apply to grad schools in the US, and in January, I'll finish my work here and travel for six months through Eastern Europe. I visited Budapest in February, staying with Ed DuBois (BSM Spring '99 -- edubois@pomona.edu) and visiting with professors Toth, Gyarfas, and Buczolich!   NEWS: (Dated November 2000) I went back to Budapest in August 1994 for a week. Everything had gone commercial by then; one of the harshest instantiations of this fact was the huge sign hanging in Oktagon saying "KFC -- All You Can Eat" (in English!). After finishing BSM, I went to Princeton in mathematics in 1992; I finished a Ph. D. unber Bob MacPherson (IAS) in geometric methods of representation theory. Meanwhile, I got married, and owing to various factors (including the infamous two-body problem) I left academia. I spent three years doing computer security R+D in Ithaca, NY, and this summer we moved to western Wisconsin, where my wife is a math professor and I am doing Java development (in the Twin Cities, a rather long commute). I stayed with Ivan and Hedy Bach and I would be very happy to get in touch with others who stayed with them, or with anyone else who'd like to share experiences of Budapest!

  NEWS: (Dated August 1996) After finishing my B.A. in 1990 I played for a year in California and for two years in Colorado. Now I am in the South finishing up a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering (Logistics) at Georgia Tech. My research uses optimization techniques to design freight distribution networks. Currently I am working with Ford on their North American parts distribution. I plan to finish next summer. Then, as many logistics problems are global, I could end up anywhere.

  NEWS: (Dated September 1996) After leaving Budapest and returning to Reed College Dave spent a year writing his senior thesis, a magnificent tome on the subject of evolutionary game theory. Rather weary from the experience, he slept for the three months following, rising once for a month-long jaunt across the country in a UHaul truck with return trip to Portland on greyhound. Dave has recently purchased his third accordion and is recovering from chronic unemployment.

  NEWS: (Dated March 2005) My unforgettable, magical time in Budapest inspired me to keep on travelling. I finished my BMath at the University of Waterloo in 1991, but dropped out of a PhD in astronomy at Harvard in 1994. Since then I've been fortunate enough to spend about half of my time travelling the world with my backpack or my bicycle, through 65 countries at last count. I teach English in Japan sometimes to support my travel habit, and may try again at teaching math at international high schools.

  NEWS: (Dated October 1999) Got my "Piled Higher and Deeper" (P.h.D.) from UCDavis in low dimensional topology in March 1994. Promptly went to Japan on a postdoc at Nara Women's University. Published too many papers to be considered seriously for the kind of work I really wanted to do: teaching at a good liberal arts college. So I married a lady I met in Japan, and ended up at Texas A & M - Commerce for three years. A summer contract at IBM doing grunt debugging work was so much better than Texas A & M that I decided to get out before I got stuck with tenure.   NEWS: (Dated May 2003) Having gone to Princeton to study number theory, I graduated from MIT in 2000 with a PhD in algebraic geometry. (Long story.) Since then, I've been an NSF postdoc at Berkeley, loving the Bay Area weather and rueing the day I'd have to leave. It's now here: I'll be at MIT again next year, though on leave in Princeton until January 2004. Current pastimes include going to concerts, solving and creating puzzles, and taking photographs with my new digital camera; I also hope to start singing again soon.   NEWS: (Dated September 1998) After returning from Budapest, I finished my undergraduate work at Washington State and went on to get a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. I did my thesis work in algebraic combinatorics. After two semesters of T.A. work at Michigan, I decided that a teaching career is definitely not for me. So I found a nice job doing applied research in Baltimore, where I am currently living with my two pet ferrets.   NEWS: (Dated March 1998) After Budapest, I returned to Harvey Mudd, where I screwed around way too much and managed not to graduate after _2_ senior springs. I took a final class at Oklahoma State University and received my B.S. in math from Harvey Mudd in December 1996. At that point I was working at Willows Software in Saratoga, CA, but we went under in February after spending $10 million of Ray Noorda's money. Award Software bought a technology license for a song and hired most of our group, and I am still working there now.

I did that until our first daughter, Emma, was born. Since then, I have been a full-time stay-at-home mom and loving every minute of it. We just had a new baby this summer, Madeline. Our two girls are just a little over two years apart. They both are very intelligent and destined to become famous mathematicians or at the very least, famous computer scientists!

After switching from the University of Chicago to Claremont Graduate School, I switched fields from Math to Computer Science and changed schools yet again to the University of Oregon. After the untimely departure of my advisor, I moved to Pasadena and I'm now working full-time at JPL.

  NEWS: (Dated August 1996) After coming back from Budapest, I decided that math wasn't for me, so I went to graduate school in Slavic Linguistics and Hungarian at Indiana University. I just finished my MA in Hungarian; my thesis was about vowel harmony in Old Hungarian and about the harmonization of Slavic loanwords in Old Hungarian. I've also just finished my PhD coursework for my doctorate in Slavic linguistics, and am getting ready to take my PhD exams. I have also just gotten married (June 29, 1996) to Durward McDonell (BSM Fall 88-Spring 89). We'll be in Minneapolis for the next year; Durward has a job for this year the University of Minnesota. I have no idea what I"ll be doing up here -- I'm looking for a position teaching Russian, but if that doesn't work out, we'll see what I find.   NEWS: (Dated June 1999) For the last few years I was an NSF postdoc at Northeastern Univ in Boston, then a visitor at Brandeis. Finally, this spring I got a tenure-track job at Michigan State in East Lansing. That's a huge relief. I will start the job in Fall 2000, and stay at Brandeis the coming year. I've been working on characteristic-free representation theory of algebraic groups, the geometry of Schubert-like varieties, and quiver represenations. I got married a year and a half ago, to Shaohui Zhai, a math grad student at Northeastern. She is doing her thesis on information theory and statistics. She is from Beijing, and I am only starting to learn Chinese, but I hope I can do it eventually. We plan to have kids soon. I haven't been back to Budapest in over two years. I miss it, and I hope Shaohui will like visiting there. Right now, we can't travel abroad because we are applying for her Green Card.

  NEWS: (Dated September 1996) As many of you first semester participants know, Susan Gilbert (who we met in Budapest) and I got married in her home town of Preston, England, in '89. Both Arthur and Julian were able to attend, as were Ferenc and Andras (my Hungarian hosts)! We then moved to Austin, TX, where I was finishing up my PhD in CS (after getting my BA in math from Reed College in '85). In '91 I took a job at a small undergraduate public liberal arts college, the University of Minnesota at Morris, where I teach pretty much anything in the CS curriculum, typically with a strong formalist bent, as well as various general education courses. I finished my degree in the spring of '93, and in December of '93 our son Thomas was born. Sue's studying art and history (typically of things other than art), as well as learning the piano and spending too much time surfing the Net :->. My current fixation is gardening, especially using native plants.

I'm on the Churchill College Football (soccer) team, the Churchill College Baskeball team, the Churchill College Water Polo team, the Cambridge University Judo Club, and of course, the Cambridge University Water Polo team.

  I took up Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu last year. It's a great martial art. I've been in two competitions. I placed second in both. One I was ahead in the finals before I dislocated a rib (yes, you can dislocate a rib - it's very uncomfortable and you can go into shock), and the other I feel quite strongly that I was robbed. Two second places is still a great result I think.

  I will either be returning to the States to MIT or remaining here for a PhD. Basically I'll go wherever the the people funding me tell me.

After completing my studies there last fall, I was able to take a semester off and travel throughout East Central Europe and the Balkans for 5 months. I experienced more personal growth during my 9 months in Europe than I ever could have at home, but that was far from what I expected when I first decided to enroll in the BSM program. First in Eger, then in Istanbul, and most recently at a Hungarian party in Cambridge, MA.   NEWS: (Dated August 1997) After BSM I went back home and started kicking myself for not taking that post-BSM job for three months with the Regional Environmental Center north of Florian ter. I did end up declaring a Sociology major to complement my Math one, though, so that was fun and exciting (right, Jenny?!) Until the end of September, when I resume classes at 'K', I'm completing my senior thesis in Detroit on urban community gardening (while living at a peace community/shelter for women and children!) and trying at the same time to fill out applications to go back to Hungary to study things sociological. I hope to eventually combine my interests and do the grad school thing in public policy or public health or the like, but I'll always be an activist at heart. :)

  NEWS: (Dated July 1996) After my semester in Budapest in '87, I went back in the spring of '89 to hang out for a semester. I completed my graduate work at UC Berkeley in '95 (in complex analysis), and I am now an assistant professor at Northwestern University, a position which, unfortunately, is scheduled to last only through the summer of '97.   NEWS: (Dated February 1997) I am finishing off my last semester of undergraduate studies and will graduate this May with a BS in Mathematics and minors in Comp Sci and Humanities with an Honors degree in the Humanities. Currently I have been playing my trombone in Valparaiso University's Jazz Band and in the Crusader (Pep) Band. I've also been going through rehab on my knee so I might be able to run in a track meet one last time before graduation (my knees got sore from the Minaret in Eger). As for my future plan, I decided (while I was in Budapest) to enroll in a Pre-Sem after graduation.

I am enjoying the teaching I do--I originally thought teaching at a community college might be uninteresting, but it is quite the opposite. I feel challenged every day by people who "hate math!"

Fooled aournd as permanent staff at a summer camp for 4 years,got married, spent 3 more at a tiny software company wondering how my life could match dilberts, and finally jumped ship to slack off and get paid for it at the organization behind the US Olympic swim team.
